The department is also responsible for the oversight and inspection of storm water controls for residential and commercial site developments and all capital improvement projects. The department assists in the development and implementation of all programs relating to environmental protection and control.

Enforcement of all city codes and ordinances as they relate storm water quality, water and waste water compliance, drought contingency implementation and enforcement and hazardous materials incident reporting and clean up oversight is done through the Environmental Department. The department has a public outreach and education program that provides education on pollution prevention and conservation efforts.
